Cape Epic 2014

The eleventh Absa Cape Epic takes place from 23 to 30 March 2014 and will offer participants from around the world an awesome dramatic new route that showcases the best the Western Cape has to offer. Both local and international mountain biking enthusiasts will take on the demanding eight day mountain bike adventure of 718km with 14 850m of climbing.

The new route will lead 1 200 cyclists through vast distances of virgin territory, previously untouched by the race. The race will start at Meerendal Wine Estate in Durbanville with stage locations at Robertson, Greyton and Oak Valley Wine Estate. Lourensford Wine Estate in Somerset West will host the finish of the race and the Grand Finale celebrations on 30 March 2014 with live entertainment, a Farmer’s Market, delectable food and wine as well as glorious scenery.

Durbanville’s Meerendal Wine Estate will be the sponsor of the teams participating in this year’s Absa Cape Epic. The organisation has grown from humble beginnings and is a powerful collaboration between Christoph Sauser, world champion mountain biker and Songo Fipaza, a well-recognised local community leader.

Sauser rides for since 2008 to uplift the community of Kayamandi near Stellenbosch, where Fipaza lived for years and works tirelessly to bring about change in the community. Sauser recognised the opportunity to connect his global network to the man who was working so hard to help make children’s dreams possible. Sauser feels that the kids look up to him. “They’d also like to become pro riders and win the Absa Cape Epic. It’s so important to have goals in life!”

Sauser is intensely involved with some of the riders’ training programmes. When he is in Stellenbosch he plans Sipho Madolo’s training programme and trains with him almost every day where Chistoph adds much professionalism and fun to their training!
